Mast cells have been recognized for a long time as mere effector cells in allergic reactions. New studies suggest that mast cells are not only involved in anaphylactic reactions, but also during the development and maintenance of allergic inflammation. Indeed, studies in models of allergic asthma demonstrate a pivotal role of mast cells in the development of airway inflammation and bronchial hyperreactivity. Especially mediators produced by mast cells, like histamine and tumor necrosis factor, are involved in this process.

Mastzellen sind seit Jahrzehnten als „Allergieeffektorzellen“ im Rahmen akuter allergischer Reaktionen beschrieben. Neuere Daten belegen nun, dass Mastzellen nicht nur an der Auslösung anaphylaktischer Reaktionen beteiligt sind, sondern auch maßgeblich für die Entstehung und Unterhaltung allergischer Entzündungsreaktionen sind. Insbesondere Untersuchungen an Modellen des allergischen Asthmas belegen eine zentrale Rolle von Mastzellen bei der initialen Entwicklung einer Atemwegsentzündung und bronchialen Überempfindlichkeit. Dies scheint durch Mastzellmediatoren, wie Histamin und Tumor-Nekrose-Faktor, vermittelt zu werden.
